I realize this might be highly controversial but hear me out. I've noticed a recent shift as the plight to fix the broken immigration system continues. I support all groups fighting for a pathway to citizenship and other protections; however, recently I've seen the backlog community use "legal dreamers" when advocating for their cause. The problem is they're inserting themselves into what constitutes a dreamer in the traditional legal definition that was created when DACA was established and as a result the conversation has become heavily convoluted.
Recently I've also noticed that the advocates for "documented" dreamers have taken over the conversation. If you go to any tweet that talks about immigration/DACA/Reconciliation or the account of Gov. officials that talk about these issues there is an overwhelming amount of tweets that are advocating for a fix to the green card backlog which I fully support, my issue is with the fact that the word Dreamers has become somewhat convoluted in it's use and has cause a lot of confusion as to what our end goal is which is a pathway to citizenship. I've seen this community take over the conversation and speak on behalf of DACA recipients in terms of what they'd accept from the Biden administration. ex. I've heard them say they'd settle with Plan C instead of continued pressure for the initial goals that were promised.
Two months ago I read tweets from the backlog folks putting down undocumented immigrants and saying they deserve to be the priority over DACA and other immigrants. At the time I thought that there were always going to be people with this type of mentality but they were not the majority. As time passed by every single tweet has backlog folks putting down the undocumented and saying that they're highly skilled and did it the "right" way and that undocumented immigrants shouldn't be "rewarded" I've even begun to see articles asking congress to prioritize this community over the others.
While we have similar goals the circumstances are completely different between traditional dreamers and "legal" dreamers thus complicating any conversation especially since the backlog issue has more foreign policy complications in terms of per country quotas and the circumstances are different as well in terms of the reasons we came to this country.Â
It's interesting since DACA recipients could have theoretically only advocated for themselves since the start since we have the highest support for legalization from both parties but we continued to support all our brothers and sisters in this broken system. Again I'm all for everyone fighting for their communities but it's a slap in the face seeing a sub group take over the conversation, speak on behalf of another marginalized community (DACA) and put other communities down which at the start were the priority (DACA, TPS, farmworkers)
This post is probably too late since immigration news are around the corner and at the end of the day we're all being used as pawns by both parties; however, it was an observation that shocked me and I had to voice my opinion.
