Curious about weapons

Not sure why but I've always used a staff, is there ant clear differences good/bad to using a two hand rather than a 1 hand weapon and off hand. I get a TON of focus drops just never entertained them. The higher I get 74 atm the more dagger drops I'm getting as well.
