"The" Schism (at least the miniseries preceding Logan taking his group back to NY and founding a new school) was a miniseries about how different Logan and Scott's outlooks regarding the future of mutantkind were becoming. Scott believed in field testing all the younger X-Men, since as an "endangered species," they didn't have the luxury of time, and Logan believed that they should be protected until they learned as much as possible about controlling their powers so they weren't a danger to anyone.
There probably was another schism after Scott killed Xavier, but I was more thinking of the series itself.
