I put on Judge Dredd last night. The Karl Urban one, and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed it.
It also reminded me of a niggle in my brain? Why I see "cyberpunk" shots from Picard that make me wince, but Blade Runner feels so perfect.
If you've ever grown up even close to poor, especially in a city, you know it's not all thugs and fantasy villains.
Most people are just other people trying to live their lives
Sure, someone's slinging shit. But its 90% kids on skateboards, bodegas, and immigrant families cooking dinner. It's not a "perfect", mostly white and high tech society, it's organic. It's just life. And most people are just trying to get by.
Blade Runner 2049 works because, it turns out, he's actually not that special. It's a meat grinder, sure. But that's just life.
You're probably not that special. You're not unimportant either. You mean a lot to your family and your community. But we are all just leaves on a very big tree.
Cyberpunk works best when it's organic, when it shows reflections of the language the city uses to speak. Food carts, graf, and the ordinary.
Just... a random thought.
