In this post I will share a few musical additions to my games that have helped enhance the mood for my players. These songs are ones I've used in the early game, but I hope they still help people.I will preface this by stating my party may be different from yours, some parties prefer realism and dislike modern music included in their games. If this is the case, disregard this post. I utilize a lot of synthwave in my games, this may not be for everyone.
I intend to share a few songs, and the context in which I used them, to hopefully inspire people to use music in their games in a more prominent fashion.
Firstly the theme song, as in I play this every game after the recap. Hang'em All
This next song Leather Teeth I used when the player investigated the animated armor in death house. You can use this for any encounter where you want 20 seconds to describe a situation before they are surprised by something. Practice this a few times on your own to get the timing right.
This next one I used when the players approach the church in The Village Of Barovia. The House Of The Rising Sun When the players eventually limp out of here, after a fight with Doru, play the real version.
If the players kill Doru and Donnovich is still alive, have him cry over his body and begin to sing this. These are the original lyrics to this song and it is hella depressing. Make the players feel bad for killing this priest of the morning lords "sunshine."
Anyway I hope someone is inspired to use any of these songs. I've found music to be my most useful tool for conveying emotion. Please don't disregard the use of it in your games.
