Hello everyone! I come to you with an idea for another take on the module (One I'm hoping I can use on some friends) and I would like to hear your thoughts on it.
So! The setting is Barovia obviously, but it takes place a decade before the usual start of the game, meaning that our good old vampire lord is resting in his coffin trying to forget about Tatyana (I'm treating this as a proper hibernation, Strahd is unaware of anything that isn't threatening the whole land, it also allows the world to naturally replenish souls) leaving the running of the lands to the wives and Escher...
Well, in all honesty, Anastrasya is running things as Volenta plays noble and torturer, and Ludmilla remains high in her tower and in the mountains. While Anastrasya is usually happy to take care of everything for Strahd, things have gotten a little out of hand as rifts created by the other dark powers have started to appear making things more difficult and the lesser spawns are up to their usual antics thinking that they can replace Strahd or find Tatyanas replacement. As such Anastrasya has decided to hire adventurers to help her, not the usual ones that the Vistana or the mists bring along however, she wants people whose purpose is to help her out (Even if in the long run they betray her)
So! That's the setup! The first quandary is to whether have the players be invited via letters or have them be revived from previously slain adventurers and put under a Geass or some similar contract, to be dispelled later.
Another is how to change up the quests, I have many ideas but there's room for brand new things.
In order of importance I would say:
-Find the artifacts, which are a constant thorn on the royal family's end whenever adventurers come across them.
-Go to the town of Barovia to deal with the Durst family, they keep making people disappear
-While you're there investigate that temple that rose from the river, seems like an old spirit wants to return (Each fane will have her own temple)
-Also in Barovia have the burgomaster have a child or choose a successor
-Speaking of which, A man of the Watcher family is being really uppity about our lord Strahd, show them that none shall speak ill of our glorious leader.
-Help the orphanage broker a deal with the werewolves before the Vallakian people get themselves killed
-The Abbot in Krezk needs help with something, I don't like how he smiles at me so you go help him
This is a sampling of the idea. What do you think? Would it work?
