What prevents Beucephalus from keeping Strahd safe on the ethereal plane?

It seems like the Nightmare could keep Strahd on the EP for forever. It could also go into the material plane out of sight, run up to strahd in trouble, and save him during combat.
What would motivate Strahd or Beucephalus from doing this?
