A couple games ago, my players managed to blow up Vallaki. St. Andral's Feast went down, and not only did Strahd get his way, but due to some other events not in the book, Strahd turned Milivoj into a lieutenant of his with the task of hunting down the players. This had an amazing reaction, and caused genuine fear as the players watched this troubled kid they failed to help become a not so big bad, while also providing me a villain to use in Strahd's place, show his presence, yet not obliterate the players.
Upon fleeing the town of Vallaki, the players opted to have Rictavio join them and headed towards Van Richten's tower. Last session we arrived there, and Rictavio revealed himself as the Vampire hunter. Picking up this weekend I'm juggling two different issues, and need input. Van Richten is Strahd's enemy, yet the players don't know that yet. They haven't seen him with his monkey and have no reason to suspect otherwise. On top of that, the Tome is at his tower. These objects have been in place for months, but I didn't expect the players to come so close to both at once. They don't suspect either fortune to be here, and in fact are only here because they suspect the sunsword may be in lake baratok. Do I reveal one or both of the fortunes? Do I let them spend a session looking for something they are WAY off on? Advice would be appreciated greatly.
(Side info, Ireena and Ismark have split from the party and are headed to the vineyard, but Strahd knows this, and the players know that Strahd knows. They planned to get the sword and meet them there. That's their next move, or that's what they've informed me at least)
