I think this is a very unhelpful way of thinking about disability for a few reasons. Firstly, we are not independent, self-sustaining, unattached people. We live within a society, and how people are treated within our society reflects on us. We have the resources to take care of everyone, there’s no reason not to besides greed.
If compassion isn’t compelling, another reason is that we all become disabled (through old age or accident) or we die too soon to see it. If we view disability as something to be dealt with on an individual basis, we will have no support ourselves. Disability isn't something that exists in a vacuum, it's extraordinarily intertwined with societal norms and systems.
