How do I replace one necklace with another?

There’s got to be a workaround for this. Leshy has the long lifespan necklace, but I want to give him an eternal life necklace. I tried killing him in his sleep and reviving him, but he still had the necklace. I also tried sending him to find more followers after which he died upon returning and I revived him and he still had the necklace.
