Neo-Cleansing/Charging of Crystals

Hello, novice here I have had a few crystals of the years never doing much with them. I recently obtained a Black Tourmaline, my crystal loving friends often talking about charging and /or cleansing their crystals. Such methods being sunlight, rainwater, sunlight, and many other methods. In my research on my new Tourmaline, I discovered that it protects against electromagnetism and radiation. My question is can crystals be charged through the use of electromagnetic sources?
