Hi all, Aleks from Holoframe here.
Collectible Avatars have exploded on OpenSea in the last few weeks, so my teammates and I thought to ask a couple of people on Reddit what they think about their NFTs.
We picked a couple of dozen replies as highlights, they might help explain why Reddit NFTs are such an insane success. Giant thanks to the hundreds that wrote up lengthy, awesome, insightful responses!
Here's what Redditors think about their NFTs:
I like the artwork, very cool, and I like collecting things, so it was easy math for me, first of all, claiming one took all of one second, and required little to no effort from me, so idk that's really the question to ask, tbh
I think the real question is why did I spend almost 400usd on them almost immediately afterwards lol
Reddit NFTs stood out to me because they are held on the Polygon chain, have immediate utility on the mobile app customizing avatars, and overall I just like the art.
I claimed my first avatar, the Singularity, and truthfully didn't want to buy any; it didn't feel like mine was very rare or valuable bit I was happy with what I got. However there was this one little cute dragon that I really loved and had to have, so from never having spent money on Reddit I put out $25 for Lara Lava.
After that it was all downhill, I just started buying several on aesthetic some on hype as well. They sold out and I still had a mini snoo that I wanted which pushed my total spent on Drip alone to ~$90-100. I love all of my avatars and only have two set to sell on the secondary market, the first to recover cost and second to get my first full Ethereum.
I like that its simple to buy, use and mix and match! Where NFT isn't my thing, but pfp/customizing/characters/cosplay is!
To be honest at first, I really don't like any NFTs since for me it was just another jpeg or png, but when I heard about Reddit NFTs(avatar) with such a cool looks in it created by an actual artist and has a special privileges when being used inside Reddit, that's what makes me buy one and after a couple of days that 1 Avatar I have has already a price offer higher than the amount when I bought it which makes me think that this is also a good investment in long term while being able to use it and personally own it.
This is a different kind of NFTs which has an actual use cases when you set it as a profile in Reddit, which in the long run might be a good investment. This what makes me buy and claim Reddit NFTs.
I just bought this Classic Foustling because I really liked the art! I like the fact that you can use them as avatars and that there are only a certain amount. I never really intended this purchase as an investment but I'm happy to see people caring so much about it!
I believe that Reddit is the first social media platform that is successfully adopting web3 into its ecosystem with its cryptocurrency, nfts and mainstream adoption by its millions of users, with actual utility - with their Reddit nft avatars users can customized their pfps as part of their user profile.
They can transfer these nfts within Reddit directly. I believe that this is merely the beginning for Reddit nfts and this is why I own Fishy Foustling #1, the most valuable Reddit avatar in the most popular collection by volume.
I like the Reddit avatars because I can pick and choose limited editions to create a unique look that's just me.
Mid/End August my little brother wrote me about the free avatar drop. I immediately went to Reddit to do my research. I was a bit sad that my fav avatar TheEyes was already sold out in the Reddit shop.
Iām a bit longer in the Crypto/NFT game so I had some experience in that space. So I went to Opensea and searched for TheSenses collection and got my TheEyes #14 for 0.063 ETH (~100$). At that time there was absolutely no action on the secondary market with a total volume of (~0.85 ETH). I bought some more avatars to find my personal style and create my personal limited avatar.
After a time I got addicted and bought more and more avatars (in the end my best decision in 2022)and now I can make bank with them.
bought avatars for ~ 500$
at ATH I had 11 ETH and now Iām at 6 ETH.
So back to your question:
What do I like about the Reddit avatars ?
The Limitation, the customize factor and the tradeable aspect are the main reasons. Idk if I would buy an avatar if there was no limits/no sell option. Sure I also buy skins and gems for 10$, but after the avatar experience I will think twice if I buy me another untradeable / unlimited piece in apps and games.
I really like to see the Ā« face Ā» of my avatar whenever I answer any post. Also, I find the collections with remakes of Snoos very beautiful. And finally, I canāt say I donāt see that as an investment because I think (I hope) that it will be very big some day!
The customization is really cool, also I feel like they are a pretty cool piece of internet history.
I've been buying nfts for over a year now and love the tech behind then and possibilities they open.
As a long time reddit user, it made sense for me to buy at least 1. When I learned about how they were largely benefiting the artists, and how unique the art was, I was tempted to buy more. I got a little carried away as I love the collectibility and scarcity nature of nft. It's a lot of fun, and opens up a world of possibilities.
At first glance, it looks like there aren't many trait combinations, since each collection only has 3 styles. Yet, there are countless combinations that one can come up with if you own multiple. Adds a fun collectible nature to them as well, as maybe one would buy a specific NFT just for the pet that piece has.
What I like about Reddit NFTs is that theyāre not just a static jpg or image. Each NFT is made up of around 5-8 different parts that are interchangeable when you are customizing your Reddit avatar profile pic.
I never bought an NFT before but when I saw these I instantly bought 2 from the last 3 that were still on sale. Once they sold out I even figured out how to use opensea for the first time because I wanted a Cone Head NFT.
Itās the first meme NFT from the Redditās avatar collections and the community is honestly the most fun one Iāve been in for years!
I held off originally due to them not being well received on reddit to begin with. Then I saw a post on how to claim a free one and I wound up with a Meme Team.
From there I found the avatar trading community which had a very positive outlook on them. They convinced me to purchase one.
So after looking through the collections there were two that stood out to me as they reminded me of drawings I'd made in the past (albeit amateurish in comparison). Mio Armor and Frustrated.
If I'd have got in earlier there are a couple more (and not for monetary reasons) that I'd love to have grabbed. Would've loved a Foustling!
I like the ability to have a unique, exclusive Avatar that Iām able to customize so many different ways.
Reddit is helping introduce blockchain technology to people with out some of them even knowing it, making it easy for new people. Iām excited for the future of these NFTs.I claimed one then bought some because I enjoy customizing my avatar and I believe the future is bright for Reddit NFTs.
I just collect them for fun and maybe sooner it will give me profits.
Yes, I claimed my free NFT from Reddit. It got me into the paid Reddit NFT collections, which have done quite well! Sneaky Reddit!
1: I claimed one because I love tech, and reddit. Been a redditor for 12 years, and interested in crypto/blockchain/nfts for about 2 years. It was a no brainer to accept it, and buy a few for fun, although when they started to really sell out I did panic buy two more.also the idea of being able to trade/sell on OpenSea was really appealing, even though I haven't sold/traded on OpenSea yet.
I'm waiting for an internal way to trade/sell the avatars. I'm also a cartoonist and love supporting artists, and would love to become a reddit artist as well.
I like how reddit managed to implement NFTs better than any other web2 company. Tbh i bought some avatars cause i see good upside potential and my goal is to flip them for a nice profit.
Other than that, it is really great to stand out and get more upvotes on my comments which result in earning more coins on subreddits like r / cryptocurrency.
Iām also hooked on making different combinations now :D
No problem! It may be worth mentioned the untapped market size of Reddit as well. The success of other projects benefitted from Twitter in that you could make your pfp an NFT.
Reddit is proportionally just as large as Twitter, and your āpfpā on Reddit is exclusive to Reddit NFTs. Itās almost a missed opportunity for Twitter to make their own platform exclusive collection. Itās a really bullish factor that a lot of us in the space have identified.
Well you see Reddit avatars are what got me into nfts. When they first started sending out the free avatars it got me interested into the nft market. What I like about them is the whole mix and match and trade idea. I claimed one 1. Because they look awesome 2. Because I saw the potential they had in the market.
I believe Reddit did a wonderful job with this collection of avatars, because it allowed redditors to step into the NFT world without having to deal with crypto transfers. They made the process of minting one as easy as possible on their plarform, while also making people interested in finding out more about the wider NFT market in case they wanted to sell or buy after their favourites had sold out.
The fact that you can mix and match different traits of the avatars to create your own individual piece is genius, and the feeling of giving back to all these amazing artists makes the whole thing feel extra special.
I thought it was a brilliant marketing move to give away free avatars to most active users and to allow them to pick between 4 different collections, it not only made people aware of the store but it also changed the overall feeling surrounding these avatars.
The community around avatar trading has been growing and it's becoming more like a big family everyday, and it made it possible for us to interact with the artists we admire so much and to follow their work closely.
All in all, I think Reddit did a marvelous job with these collections, and I hope this is just the beginning of a long and awesome journey!
At first glance I didnāt know about the new reddit avatars, but when I got offered one I chose the AwwFriends because, yāknow, cute!
Only after I claimed it I realized I had claimed an NFT, which I was quite glad about as I had always been interested in nfts, yet didnāt have the money nor took the time to invest the money. Now I just really enjoy having it!
I bought one because they looked cool to me and because i thought they might be worth something in the future. I didnāt thought they would go up that much through. I also really enjoy the combine them with each other.
Collectability. I like things with a limited print run.
What do you like about Reddit NFTs?
I like the art. I can simply be a cat one day, and something more creative another. I like how Reddit continues to support artists with every secondary sale. That's the biggest incentive for me to support Reddit NFTs.
Why did I claim one?
One day, I saw I could get a free avatar and thought why not! That free avatar got me to check out the shop. Where I then saw a bunch of artists I know from Reddit created avatars. So, I bought some more.
At first I bought 2 of them because i liked the art and it was a nice way to support the creators. When I discovered that you can customize and mix them, I bought a few others.
What I like about them is obviously the fact that I can use them as an avatar and they cannot be faked. But I'm getting the most fun out of mixing and matching different avatar attributes and merging them into a single one!
It's pretty mind-blowing to think how many possible combinations you can create when owning just a few of them, let alone the entire collection, which would likely amount to a billion of combos.
I personally think it's a game-changer, since you'll never get bored with your avatars if you keep playing with them. I use reddit to discuss and express my opinions and having my own customized avatar lets me convey my identity in a way, as aesthetics definitely play a big part of my identity.
The first one I claimed was the free one and it got me hooked on the rest of them. Finally, reddit did a great job choosing a wide variety of talented artists and knowing that I support them makes me think the money is well spent. I'd like to see the crypto/NFT space thrive so I'm happy to wear my avatar and be active in all sorts of communities on reddit.
I saw the purchasable ones go live earlier this year and (regretfully) didn't do anything at the time. I claimed my free avatar and didn't think anything else of it.
Then, In August, someone posted on the Cryptocurrency subreddit that they were flipping the rarer ones for massive ETH gains on Opensea and it prompted me to look into it further!
I picked up a couple I thought might be popular and I've done some trading with them since then.
What I like is that it's an "Official" Reddit thing, I was never sure about buying any NFTs until now, so Reddit prompted me to do it really! I can't wait for the next generation they launch!
I didn't like NFTs before but since Reddit contributed to the NFT aspect it made it for everyone fun and especially the free NFTs. I am a web developer myself and I like to develop projects for r / cryptocurrency and can't wait to make a custom marketplace to integrate NFTs in there. I like Reddit introducing NFTs and crypto like MOONs. I really like their appearance and the style as well. I claimed it because it was free and it made me curious. I always hated NFTs because they were so overrated and overvalued but if I get one for free, why not I thought.
So Iāve never had an NFT, never saw something that got my interest or that had utility and one day a few months ago I noticed that Reddit was selling avatar NFTs for pretty affordable prices comparable to the inshore prices for items you didnāt even own so I gave it a try.
Then I noticed that I could mix several avatars to create my own custom one and I fell in love. Then people got really into it and prices on the secondary market started going crazy and I tried doing some flipping and it worked really well.
Now I have lots of them and contrary to what people say I wish Reddit keeps creating new ones and bring in new artists so everyone can be a part of this. Feels like Reddit has something special going on and Iām really proud to be part of history.
I like the art styles, the endless combinations and the fact that they are more unique than default avatars. That and because I was always curious about Web3 tech but could never be bothered with figuring out the technical details of it. Reddit avatars was a really low barrier of entry to test the waters on it.
Things I like about them is that they create a special bond between them and the person. Representing the redditor in a unique and creative way. I bought a couple of them because in a way I see myself in them. Another reason is to support the creators in the community which are very talented.
Hey, Iāve dabbled in Cosmos NFTs (Bad Kids!) but am not super into them. I got an Aww Friends dropped over the summer and didnāt really get into them until the second drop last week when I was lucky enough to mint around 20.
I think theyāre awesome and like how you can mix and match different pieces. Always down for a good hype train too.
It's not the NFTs I enjoy but the way Reddit introduced collecting on the blockchain. I claimed the avatar because I knew it was something special, a massive intro to web3 and converting haters into believers.
I absolutely love Reddit NFTs for several reasons. The platform and the way it was introduced was near perfect. Everyone on reddit gets some type of avatar, and if you'd like a more exclusive one you can buy it directly from Reddit.
That's what it is advertised at first glance. The part I love is the way they integrated blockchain without specifically telling anyone it's blockchain.
Another great thing I love is the fact that they centralized the avatars themselves. Everyone gets an avatar, and it's a global icon now which is what NFTs needed.
The hate around mainnet NFTs (in my opinion) is because of the stories of how much money people have made with JPEGs and unfortunately they can't be apart of it. Now everyone has a chance to be apart of it without having in some manner as Reddit does occasional airdrops and I do expect them to integrate Karma in some manner to allow their loyal members get drops.
I think the move was amazing. I came from Main Net NFTs and I'm a founder of a big project myself, so I'm very bullish on Reddit NFTs as I put around $30,000 within it.
I didnāt claim one. On July 14th I bought The Mouths #86 on the shop for $50.
I love them. This is just the beginning. Why?
You have kids who play Roblox? Ask them about the Korblocks Deathspeaker. Roblox avatars are also able to combine different traits or features. They buy this avatar for $150-$200 just so they can use one leg. Thatās it. This is why I got Hooked. We can buy cones just for the cone.
They are really dope on chain collectibles. I've been collecting NFTs for almost 2 years now and these are revolutionary. People who know nothing about crypto or wallets were instantly given a wallet and the ability to sell/trade their collectible. This is still really early stuff. People are just sleeping.
Yeah so Iāve been a life long collector. Got into digital collectibles early last year with the veve app. And move over for open sea.
Was early into BAYC and many other Nfts. Just got into reddit digital collectibles this week. And Iām hooked. Theyāre super cute. And love the swappable traits. Just fished customizations on my avatar before seeing this message. Added a cute cat beside her and a necklace. But yeah been having a blast in this community and no plans on selling. Just growing the collection. To have more optional builds / looks ššš»
I like that you can mix and match between the collections, many NFT collections the high values pieces within a collection are usually ones with desired traits.
But they are all randomly generated when created so you might not be able to get hypothetical collection of traits you would want. With reddit I believe the same will apply kinda like the conehead for example where it's value comes from a single trait but still able to get the rest avatar to be able to look the way you want. I claimed one bc it was free and I bought 2 Foustlings in the reddit store as I feel they fit the theme of rare collectable's. And the scarcity element.
