Iberian Struggle

Anyone have any clue what’s going on in the struggle? I’ve been out of the loop for about a year, and recently started playing again. I’ve done a couple play throughs now and every time Spain looks like a fustercluck and then I get a message about the struggle ending in status quo and everyone there becomes emperors. I’d like to do an Iberia play through but I have no idea what is going on there and honestly I’m too scared to find out.
