Not exactly sure what happened...

So I am playing as Sheikh of Kurdistan and I declared independence against my Emir (liege) and won. He granted me independence. Then all of a sudden I noticed my Caliph (Emperor) must have revoked it and gave me to another Emir.
Did I do something wrong to get my independence taken away?
