Butterfly position (legs spread)?

So I'm surprised we don't see more effort to encourage this position:

I think it's clearly just not that comfortable, and not something that the feet tied flat and together encourages.

This style (feet either side of the vertical) seems rare for some reason:

Although I really don't understand why... Any thoughts on why we don't see this more, or great examples of it? Thanks!
