Hand cannons and pulse rifle viability

Hand cannons and pulse rifles are my favorite weapon classes, and have been since D1, especially high impact versions. It seems like they are just not that viable in PvP. How true I this, and do you see this changing anytime soon? It feels so rewarding to snag kills with precise aim on slow firing weapons. Auto rifles just don’t do it for me.
