Is there any way (mod or otherwise) to play this locally on LAN or with direct connect?

I had a photon cloud error dump my wife and I out of a co-op game a bit ago, and I feel super wary about online games by smaller companies (and anyone else really) not supporting local LAN / direct connect play.
It's definitely not our internet connection, it's up and good and we're on gigabit fiber.
