Hi everyone! Looking for suggestions on a crowdfunding service that works in an ongoing nature, instead of one-off or event based. And perhaps the format is more based on a community (network of friends and family) that contributes.
Let me explain the situation, and then I'm hoping you have some crowd funding service suggestions that would fit. And maybe this thread could be useful to others seeking the same kind of setup.
I have an uncle that has suffered from mental health and depression issues for his entire life. It's been off-and-on, which has prevented him from holding down a job and saving. He's also been on various forms of assistance off-and-on.
Whenever he hits a low point, he would borrow a little scratch from wherever he could - and was generally good about paying it back. We all support him, and try to encourage him to focus on coping mechanisms and life skills, professional help, etc. But it's always up and down, year after year. He's good, has a place, a car - then a down-turn, and has nothing but the clothes on his back.
This repeats, 10, 20, 30, 40 years now - he's been like this as far back as my earliest memories when I was a kid. He's nearly 60, and has mellowed out considerably but can still have fits of volatility - which basically resets his living arrangements and finances. It's very difficult to interact with him when he's at a low, as he becomes verbally abusive and incoherent.
I feel like we're past the point where his personal development will only have so much impact on the remainder of his life. And that his suffering, as he ages, is exacerbated by the little things we take for granted. Mainly, all of the discomforts involved with on-and-off homelessness. Government financial assistance comes and goes, and often requires a lot of bureaucracy and interviews and maintenance - not terribly conducive for someone with mental stability issues. His sister would conduct some of these matters on his behalf, when it was possible.
Anyway, there are dozens and dozens in our extended family (and friends!) that are still pretty close with him - we all care about his well being. It would be cool if there was a service/site that a bunch of us could plop in our credit card or PayPal details and subscribe/sponsor to offset his monthly expenses. As opposed to him collecting $20 or $50 systematically as he calls on each family member and friend.
I thought it would be kind of neat if he started a Patreon, where all he has to do is 'create' a status update (written or video) for his patrons and then he gets to cash in on each release. His friends and family would simply be sponsoring $10-20 for each status update. But it feels hacky. And despite an extensive web search, there just MUST be something more befitting of what I'm looking to set up for him.
My peeps, any ideas?
tldr; looking for suggestions on setting up a simple crowd funding for a family member's ongoing living expenses, but it needs to be recurring in nature (not one-time or event based) - and easy for all other family (and extended family) to chip in.
