Difference between I drive and A drive on the freeway.

So at 75mph on the freeway, if I am in I, the car is at 2000 rpm's in S at 75mph I am at 2500 RPM. This is while cruise control is on. So, the extra RPM's are not going to acceleration or speed, what is going on that RPM's go up but the speed is constant.
