Top to bottom or bottom up?

Hi there! So I've decided I want to make a tunic for a cosplay but I don't really like any of the patterns I'm finding. So if I were to make my own V neck tunic, would I start from bottom to top or top to bottom? Also if anyone has any patterns I can use as a guide that would be appreciated :) if crochet doesn't work out, I will also try sewing it.
