It doesn't take astute observation skills to see that the fall of New Left brought about a massive loss of class consciousness. I'm looking for works that examine systematic (for want of a better word) 'lumpenification' of previously politically active working-class communities in particular, especially after the fall of the Iron Curtain and 9/11. It seems to be mainly tied to the allure of populism but I can't say for sure.
What got me curious about this was seeing quarters of my city that were previously considered "bulwarks of left thought" degrade into poor and apathetic banlieues in mere decades. Reading Debord's bleak idea of global concentrated spectacle encouraged me to read more about the rise of post-Cold War false consciousness.
