For a very long time I have criticised the Grand Master, Glen Maxwell. I have said that his innings have never come when they mattered and that he only piled on the runs when others had already done so at the top.
I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I was wrong. Glen Maxwell will be remembered as one of our greatest short form players in cricket history. We will talk about him as we do Michael Bevan. The individual score and moment won’t tell the full story of this latest innings. Having just beaten England things looked all but wrapped up. Afghanistan batted anemically to 291 and Australia thought they had the game before they had even batted. Cue a collapse to 7/91 and and the English in the commentary box getting a bit too chirpy for comfort. But cometh the hour, cometh the man (or god) and with only one working leg and no working back he proceeded to smack so many bombs Afghanistan were having flashbacks to the fall of Kabul. If David McBride can go to prison for exposing war crimes then lock Maxey up for exposing Afghanistan’s terrible fielding. It was as close to the zenith of art and sport a person has ever achieved and he’s ours. Drink it in Australia. That’s the sweet nectar of English and Afgahni tears with a small addition of nervous Indian sweat. What a beautiful game this is!
