The only reptile vet in my area is a rip off… advice?

This all started about 6 months ago - I brought one of my geckos to a reptile vet to be treated for worms and after going back 5x, getting multiple facial tests and $700 later, she still had worms. I knew she still had them because they were visible in her poops and she was still losing weight and going down hill 🙃 I ended up doing a crap ton of research and treated her on my own and she’s actually doing the best she has in a long time. Her poops are solid and there’s no visible worms, she’s active again. I feel like the vet had no idea what they were doing and were just ripping me off the entire way. Worst part is, this is the only vet who deals with reptiles within a 3hr radius of me.
Has anyone else experienced something like this?
