Those asking about the "MDD" (Modified Double Dip) are usually directed to the sidebar or the search. However, searching for "MDD" or scouring the sidebar doesn't actually yield any guides to the MDD; the glossary entry doesn't even mention that it is Chase-specific. With the purge allowing the creation of topic-specific posts, this common technique can be detailed in a central location.
- What is MDD?
Modified Double Dip, a technique of applying for both Chase Sapphire cards (Preferred/CSP and Reserve/CSR). As the name suggests, it's a modification of a previous technique, the Double Dip. Chase generally has a 48-month cool-down on sign-up bonuses for Sapphire cards, meaning that getting a bonus for one makes you ineligible for the other bonus for the next 48 months. The MDD enables getting both bonuses if one's applications are submitted correctly.
- How is the MDD performed?
Step 1. Apply for your first Sapphire card.
Step 2. Apply for your second Sapphire card on the next calendar day after your first app is approved, and ensure that it is approved that day.
Note: It's advisable to performed step 1 on a Monday-Thursday, so that both steps occur on a weekday when the recon and/or verification lines will be staffed
Note 2: Performing both steps within 24 hours is not required, but may result in only one hard pull of your credit
- What could go wrong with the MDD?
The full technique won't work if:
If you start while at/over 5/24
If you've received a sign-up bonus from a Sapphire card in the last 48 months
If you need to go through ID verification, recon, or shift credit limits while either is unavailable
If you are not judged to be credit-worthy enough for both cards, this will obviously not work
If the credit limit for these cards push you over 50% of the income on your application, you will need to call recon to shift limits to the new card
If you perform step 2 too late, you will likely be denied for the card you apply for in step 2
