Wanting to Revamp my Cash Back Strategy
Post Body

Hi all, I fell down the credit card rabbit hole yesterday and realized I am not getting the best cash back with my current US bank card and my spending habits have a changed a bit so my current cards are not working well for me. Yes I know I have a lot of stare cards but I mostly got them for the financing options. Anyway, I'm looking for a few more cards to get more cash back to save throughout the year for Xmas. I'm not looking for a super complex strat, just auto categories for the most part. Thanks in advance!

CREDIT PROFILE

  • Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of:

Wright Patt Credit Union Low Rate Platinum: $7200 limit, 12/2015

US Bank Kroger Card: $6000 limit, 07/2016 (not going to use anymore because their rewards are trash)

Kay Jewelers Store Card: $6000 limit, 11/2017

Amazon Store Card: $2000 limit, 05/2018

US Bank Rewards : $4000 limit, 07/2018

Best Buy CC: $4000 limit, 10/2019

Apple Card: $1500 limit, 07/2020

  • FICO Scores with source: TransUnion: 755, Equifax: 752. From Credit Karma App.
  • Oldest credit card account age with you as primary name on the account: Credit Union Low Rate Card: 5 yrs 9 mon.
  • Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 6 months: 0
  • Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 12 months: 1
  • Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 24 months: 2
  • Annual income $: 28k if I apply individually, $75k if I apply with my Wife which I might since we need to build her credit more.

CATEGORIES

  • OK with category-specific cards?: Yes
  • OK with rotating category cards?: Preferably no, my wife has a Discover IT card that we will use when the categories line up.
  • Estimate average monthly spend in the categories below. Only include what you can pay by credit card.
    • Dining $: 50 - 150
    • Groceries $: $450, maybe 50 to 100 at costco a few months a year but that's it.
    • Gas $: $330, I'm starting to use Costco gas exclusively. (It's cheap and great quality)
    • Travel $: Pretty much 0 for now, vacation once a year so maybe $1-2k a year. Mix between flights and hotels.
    • Do you plan on using this card abroad for a significant length of time (study abroad, digital nomad, expat, extended travel)?: No
    • Any other categories (examples: phone/internet, insurance) or stores (example: Amazon) with significant, regular credit card spend (the more you specify, the better): I'm going to use my USB card for TV and utilities I believe.
    • Any other significant, regular credit card spend you didn't include above?: N/A
    • Can you pay rent by credit card? If yes, list rent amount and if there's a fee for paying by credit card: Not 100% sure, we have had trouble in the past with our automatic payments not going through so I will probably not do this to avoid more trouble.

MEMBERSHIPS

  • Current member of Amazon Prime, Costco, Sam's Club, or a Verizon postpaid customer?: Amazon Prime and Costco.
  • Current member of Chase, US Bank or any other big bank?: US Bank
  • Active US military?: No
  • Are you open to Business Cards?: No

PURPOSE

  • What's the purpose of your next card?: Cash Back to Save for Xmas each year.

  • Do you have any cards you've been looking at?: Thinking of adding the AMEX BCP for groceries and Citi Custom Cash Back for gas. Everything else will go on my current USB Cash EDIT: Didn't realize the citi custom cash was a MC instead of Visa, so will need something else for fuel, I am in an area that can get the PNC Cash Rewards card. Thoughts on this one?
