I am in a transition space right now. I just graduated college, living with my mom at the moment, but once travel is allowed again, I will be spending the year abroad.
Based on advice from this sub, I tried applying for the CapOne Quicksilver card and was denied because of the amount of income I listed.
I've only had one credit card (a Discover Cash Back card), had it since Jan 2019, pay everything in full every month. Credit score is around 720 (according to CreditKarma).
- When is it safe to try and apply for a different card, when would it be 'safe' to do so, given that I just had a hard check from applying for the Quicksilver card? I'd want to try for the PayPal card.
- Alternatively, I could explain my situation (see below) to CapOne, but how do I not come across as begging or desperate?
- Is the income I was supposed to list about what I expect to earn in the coming year, or what I have earned in the past year?
- I assumed the former, so in terms of what I listed for income, I included the amount my parents give me each month, plus a little from an internship I'm doing this summer. I also included non-loan financial aid and scholarships from the program I will be attending abroad. Should I also expect to include gifts I expect to get (holidays, birthday, etc.)?
- I have had a mutual fund account for the past 9 or so years that was intended to be used for a program such as the one I will be attending, so will be selling the majority of it soon. How do I include that in income?
- I just moved out of an apartment, so should be getting my security deposit soon. My parents were the ones to make the check originally, but are letting me keep it now. Does this count as income?
- The CapOne application asked for housing costs. I wrote 0 because I am living with my mom rent-free. However, I will be paying rent (using the money from the mutual fund) once I'm abroad. If other applications ask about this, should I use the estimate I figured for the coming year or leave it at 0 reflecting my current situation?
I think those are the questions for now, though there may be follow ups. Sorry for the long list of questions.
