Second Credit Card for Year Abroad?
Post Body

  • Current cards: Discover it Cash Back, $5,500 limit, opened January 2019
  • FICO Score: 720 (Vantage score, Credit Karma)
  • Oldest account age: 1 year, 5 months (the Discover it card above)
  • Chase 5/24 status: 1/24, I guess, since I only have 1 card, but 0/24 if they only count Chase cards
  • Income: Just out of college, mostly supported by my parents, so the total including money they gave me for housing and other living expenses, starting in June 2019, is appx. $10,475. I got $300 from an internship last summer, and will be getting another $300 from an internship this summer. In terms of gifts from family for holidays, birthday, graduation gifts, I got about $650. Not sure what of that counts as income.
  • Average monthly spend and categories:
    • groceries: $70
    • merchandise: $50
    • restaurants: $40
    • services: $35
    • travel: $25 (but just spent $300 towards going abroad—see below)
    • other: $30
  • Open to Business Cards: No
  • What's the purpose of your next card? Mainly that, once travel is permitted, I will be spending a year abroad, and would like to have a Visa or MasterCard, since I've heard Discover isn't accepted in as many places. Because I'll be abroad, no foreign transaction fee would be great, and ideally no annual fee, but if both of those criteria are too much to ask for, I'm open to listening to other options. I don't need it to be a 'travel card' since, aside from this coming year, I don't travel much. Secondary to this purpose is to build credit, and tertiary is anything that has better cash back rewards given my spending.
  • Do you have any cards you've been looking at? If I have a good enough chance of being approved, CapitalOne's Quicksilver seems appealing, but I worry my credit score isn't quite good enough. Could also consider the Citi Double Cash Card or Chase Freedom (either Unlimited or not), though I think those charge a foreign transaction fee.
  • Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? I'm fine with category spending, as long as I still earn a smaller amount generally (like with my Discover card, I get 5% cash back on some category, but 1% on anything else).
