Credit card processing. Had anyone just taking the time to set up a merchant account with a high risk credit processor?

The only reason sites like wishtender exist is because we need merchant processing. Obviously many sites offer that service to people but require underwriting the business and in some cases an annual contract.
After seeing these sites come and go we're probably ready to just sign up for our own merchant account. Has anyone done that and if so what company do you recommend?
