Elevators that have buttons for every floor instead of up/down outside the doors

Think about how much more efficient elevators could be if the system knew where every person waiting for an elevator needed to go. What's the point of pressing "up" and then a number once you get in, it'll also save people that step.
This might only work on individual floor levels and not the ground level, but it would have to be more efficient than just having all elevators stop at every floor.
