Are lockdowns still necessary given there is a vaccine?

So I guess a lot of people (me included) were hopeful that the vaccine would mean an end to lockdowns/measures/restrictions etc.

I understand it's still early days and the vaccine hasn't been here long, but I thought with all the high risk/elderly people being vaccinated already or very soon - why is there a need for such extreme measures?

I assume it is just an issue of it taking a while to get enough people vaccinated. I guess I just want to ask, when is the vaccine expected to bring an end to all this? Or will it at all? I've heard rumblings of the vaccine not working well enough etc. So what will this mean, this is life forever now?

There is even a post on this sub right now talking about this going for another year - why would that happen???

Please is someone can fill me in a bit, I really am clueless about everything going on.

Cheers
