I just noticed European countries are starting to remove the lockdown measurements slowly,italy will open it's borders ,greece opened its beaches, france opened some tourists sites , I'm just wondering if this is a good idea since we haven't eradicated the disease, will the number of cases spike again if we removed the lockdowns ?
France lifted lockdown may 11th, after Germany and Spain. It's not just a matter of economic impact, we just are considering other factors, like a global increase of deaths amongst elders directly linked to lock downs. Like a 7 for 1 factor in the global population. Loneliness kills. Another point : we went on lockdown whilst the world was below 200000 cases on march 17th. This spectacular decision was taken to prevent potential effects of a disease we didn't knew and lack data about. France reopened while the world went above 4 millions cases reported. We have more data, we have a better understanding of how it works. And this extra chunk of data showed things like : the average age of people dying from covid is above life expectancy. Last but not least, our crop season is 3 weeks early, you actually already have tomatoes rotting on stems in Italy and Spain.
One last point tourism in France was 180 billions in France in 2017 (latest report). It's 1 million seasonal jobs. Governements need this money, as it's a double pain if tourism is stuck they'll have to get more money out while a big income source is stuck. Tourism is way different than other businesses in that: they have a direct and huge impact on gdp...
