Can we start being honest with ourselves about why COVID infections went through the roof in the last six months?

This article clearly states that the NSW Liberal government scrapped mask mandates prior to Dec 15 2021.

1 month later, the cases - which were tipped to hit 25,000 a day - were at a record 155,000 in Australia, with most of those new infections in NSW.

Can we be honest with ourselves and start looking either at the restrictions relaxed by the government, and the lack of diligence from the community generally, as to why COVID cases are now in excess of 35,000 a day simply because people didn't want to wear a mask in public?

Instead of blaming certain groups of people that the media told us to polarise against, can we start looking at either ourselves, or the government, as being the real ones to blame here?
