I love olive oil, and use it constantly. I usually buy EVOO at the supermarket, big name brands like Bertolli. Like this. This is fine, and I love it, but recently I wanted to try some of the fancier stuff. Nothing insanely expensive, about €16/liter.
I bought an Olive Oil from Achaea, Greece, and it tasted like barely anything at all. I'm used to a very strong aroma that jumps at you when you open a bottle of the commercial stuff, and a very distinct taste, but this had nothing of that. Almost no smell, and it tastes like neutral oil with a faint hint of olive. I though that perhaps this is what fancy olive oil is, more refined and natural, less flavoured. After some time, I tried again. I found this one from Italy, and decided to give it a shot. I like it a little better, but it's still very mild and very much not what I'm looking for in Olive Oil.
Is this how it is? Do I just like cheaper stuff? Or am I buying the wrong fancy oil for what I'm looking for? I see people online talking wonderful stuff about the greek one I bought first. What am I missing?
Thanks for any advice.
Edit: I wanted to clarify some things. I'm saying that the cheap stuff tastes stronger to me, and the fancy stuff tastes too weak. Not the other way around. Also, I live in Europe, not the States, although I appreciate the recommendations on Californian olive oil. Perhaps some of it made its way here to Europe
