Zest or Juice

Okay so my question is regarding lemon zest or rather any zest contra juice. When do I use what? If a recipe calls for lemon zest what properties does that bring that the juice doesn't?
I'm sorry if this sounds stupid but i've tried looking it up and can't seem to ifnd anything about it.
