What to do with papaya?

My dad died. He was the main cook for our family and just bought some groceries to make stuff for the week, the rest ot what he got was standard but theres a papaya on the table.
How do I tell if its ripe? Is it best to make with stuff or serve solo? He made pudding pies a lot with different flavors (eggnog was his most recent) but idk. I don't want it to go to waste.
