Eyes hurting when onions are chopped

So I always had sensitive eyes when it came to onions. Lately, however, it has gotten worse. I was always fine around red onions until yesterday - and I didn't even chop them. I threw them into a food processor to grate them and when I opened it up, my eyes immediately started to hurt. This particular half onion had been in the fridge for a couple of days.
Any tips or tricks to keep me from having to swear off onions for the foreseeable future?
