So I just got a new green cheek Conure on Monday and I have done a lot of research on them as they’re the first parrot I’ve owned. I’m able to be with him most of the time but was wondering if he should be let out of his cage on the first week?
For context he has exhibited lots of behaviors that many videos said were second to third week behaviors like eating out of my hand and when I sit by his cage he comes close to where I am and kinda just hangs out with me while I give him little treats through the bars. Every once in a while when I reach in to hand feed him he lets me pet him a little but usually gets nippy about it and won’t stand on my finger or even a stick I’m holding.
Today I opened the door of his cage and sat next to it. He climbed out and climbed all around the outside but he seemed fairly nervous (which I was prepared for as I knew this was all very new to him) so I fed him a couple treats while he was climbing around the outside of his cage and just talked nice to him and he, after about 3 mins ended up returning to the inside of his cage and so I closed the door behind him. Is this a routine I should continue or should I wait a little while longer to give him that out of cage time ?
And I know that eventually he’ll be needing to be out of his cage for a few hours and I’m very prepared for that. But it’s also very early in our relationship and he’s still adjusting to my house and family. So I’m hoping I can maybe get some tips and pointers, I’m really nervous and excited to build a bond with my bird and I want to make sure I’m doing it right. Thanks!
