Are fit tests required to wear a respirator? I have asthma and am concerned about the things that I am breathing while on a dusty job site so I bought a respirator. I wore it for a couple days, but the safety guys made me stop wearing it because it wasn't fitted by a doctor. I brought this up to my job steward and he said that since it wasn't required for us to wear them it doesn't necessarily have to be fit tested. I have been sticking to using the disposable N95 masks, but for the concrete drilling I am doing on occasion I fear it is not enough protection. My asthma has been flaring up like crazy and I keep getting sick so I would really prefer to wear a respirator while working. I have tried to get fit testing done but no place around me just does individual fit testing. They always do it through a contractor supplying it for their workers. Is there anything I can do or am I SOL? I'd love to just get one done through my contractor but my steward told me it is very unlikely that they will do that even if I pay for it.
