So I work in the bulk fuel industry. I am one of my company’s 2 mechanics. The one works on our 18wheeler tankers and I work on all our fuel storage tanks (all 300) and deal with diesel (both highway and off road), kerosine, and gasoline. They range in size from 2000gal to 500gal. And occasionally I’ll work on the 35,000 gal special storage units in the fuel yard. Then there are our company’s 20 gas stations, I’ll sometimes have to work on those pumps too. But here’s the thing, my boots. I’ve had a really good pair of cat boots for 3yrs now but they’ve begun to fall apart and so I went out and got a new pair (that claimed to be slip resistant too which is an added bonus). Nope, they definitely do slip when coming in contact with petroleum. And to make it worse, the soles absorbed a large amount of diesel. My old cat boots repel it pretty well but these new ones just sucked it up. Even after spraying the soles off with brake cleaner, it didn’t come out.
I’m tolerant to the diesel smell but this is overwhelming for once and I had to take them off after work and put them in my trunk.
So would anyone have any recommendations? Experience? Maybe a proper way to clean the soles and get that diesel out of them? If possible. I’m guessing some dawn and a deep scrub might do it but I also want boots that’ll not be like this so I’m not always cleaning them off daily. Maybe I’m just being picky here, idk.
