Maybe some fresh eyes on my situation will help. For a while 750-1400mg it magnesium oxide nightly was helping at least the constipation if not the bloating, but my body has adjusted to it or something because now it just makes me more bloated. I can take 6-8 oxy powder capsules in one night with no BM the next day!
I drink 1.5-2.5L water a day One coffee a day No dairy or meat, I eat fish eggs fruit and vegetables I get around 25-35g of a fibre a day of all sorts No alcohol cigarettes or drugs (I got sober 2 months ago) I am a yoga and pole fitness instructor so I exercise 1-5 hours a day and meditate twice a day Sleep 7 hours Supplements and medications: Women’s multivitamin “Gut repair” powder (prebiotics probiotics fibre etc) Fish oil Melatonin Vitamin c Biotin Magnesium oxide citrate
It’s so stubborn. I could take 4 senna laxatives and nothing would happen except my bloating getting worse. No one food seems to trigger it although cutting down on sugar seems to help (I’m not crazy about it ie. I eat fruit, some muesli bars with honey, etc. but no chocolate biscuits cakes ice cream etc). I wake up bloated and then it just gets gradually worse as the day goes on. I’ve seen GPS dietitians gastroenterologists etc and I’m at my wits end.
No real symptoms apart from constipation and bloating. I suspect my high alcohol use was mostly to blame but it’s gotten WORSE since I got sober not better :’)
Any advice at all is appreciated!
EDIT: I saw a colorectal surgeon for some pelvic floor testing and found I am incredibly hypertonic at rest. I have been recommended benefibre movicol and pelvic floor therapy to learn to relax my muscles. I will let you all know if this helps :)
Hi you might find this useful. I just went to get pcos floor testing done and they found I am very chronically tight in my pelvic floor muscles. The doctor I saw suggested that because alcohol is a relaxant, we may notice the muscle tightness less when drinking. Obviously we would like to learn to relax the muscles without abusing alcohol so I am off to a pelvic floor physiotherapist. I hope this helps!!!
Im so glad someone else experienced this I feel insane in all my sobriety groups everyone feels so good and I’m like 😀 it must have something to do with our gut biomes being used to the massive dump of sugar from alcohol? It would definitely cause severe dysbiosis. But I refuse to start drinking again. If I get answers around the alcohol specifically I’ll update you!
Omg my exact experience with magnesium! Thanks for your advice if this prune juice doesn’t work I will get some smooth move tea ❤️🙏🏻
Fermented foods wreak havoc on me but I haven’t looked into chlorophyll! Thanks for the recs 🙏🏻
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a motility issue because my whole life has been a guide on how to ruin your gut nerves. Anorexia, alcoholism, marijuana addiction, brief stint with opioids and benzos, chronic stress, antidepressant use. I’m completely sober now but probably suffering for it :’) I will ask about these medications thank you!
Oh and whatever the test for celiac is as well, I can’t remember what test but I know I had it
That’s the only one I haven’t tried because I used to think it could be a fructose thing but don’t think so anymore. I’ll give it a go thanks!
I had warm prune juice before bed and woke up even more bloated than normal 😭 had one tiny loose bm but I know there’s way more. Back to the drawing board :(
I didn’t do it. I’m pretty well managed at the moment with the following: Glass of water with ginger and lemon followed by coconut water smoothie with chia seeds immediately upon waking - hydration and soluble fibre Triphala (Ayurvedic herbal supplement) at night kombucha twice a week
Having 1-2 BMs most days now :) starting to focus on introducing more prebiotics and fibre as transit time improves
Thank you I’ll see if any of those exist in brisbane haha 🙏🏻❤️
I’m in Australia and have had a really hard time being taken seriously. I once paid $300 and waited 3 months to see a gastroenterologist who basically said it’s all in my head and I can just see my bloat more because I’m skinny which just isn’t true because I remember what it felt like to be normal. Would I have to see a gastro again for those tests ? I have so much health anxiety after years of being told I’m making it all up :’)

Oof I’m in Australia so might have to look into options in my area as that’s very expensive but thank you for the recommendation :)

All my practitioners said SIBO wasn’t real / testable in the same realm as “leaky gut” etc so I was led to believe that wasn’t necessary ?
