Very infuriating, but this DMV page on canceling your registration says:
Once the registration has been cancelled, the vehicle will be removed from the next cancellation list that is provided to municipalities on October 1 each year.
I'm almost positive this means the Grand List for auto tax assessment. Just want to confirm that if I've moved out of state and the DMV confirms my registration is canceled that I don't have to reach out to my tax connector to make sure I'm not on the grand list and won't continue to be billed for car taxes.
It would be straightforward to contact my town's tax assessor if they picked up the phone, or if I had a receipt for cancelation of the registration -- but it seems to have been canceled by the CT DMV as part of the process of transferring title to my new state's DMV. Another post in this subreddit a few months back asked the same question, but I'm still not sure of the answer.
On a side note, I just paid a late fee for my emissions inspection -- registration expired 7/30 and fee notice sent 8/30, but since I forgot to cancel my registration online and the DMV didn't cancel it till 8/31, I'm technically on the hook for the late fee. I wouldn't be surprised if after forgiving millions in late fees and being inconsistent about chasing them they're now taking it seriously, and I'd rather pay $20 than having to fight to have a late payment removed from my credit report if someone decides these things need to be sent to collections to make up for all the money down the drain from doing a shit job with these fees previously.
TL/DR: If DMV cancels your registration before Oct 1 because you are now registered in a new state, do you need to contact your municipality to make sure your car doesn't end up on this year's grand list being assessed for taxes?
