Is it possible to remove Acetone drip stains out of newer concrete?

Post Body

Got a question that hopefully someone has an answer for. I’m part of a student project on a design/build project. We have concrete that’s been cured for a while and we put our steel structure up. While we were using acetone to remove rust on the structure prior to painting, we dripped a fair amount of acetone onto the new concrete leaving these deep stains. We’ve attempted using pressure wash, scrubbing with soap and wire brushes, and baking soda with vinegar. Nothing seems to get them out really well.

It’s probably likely that we can’t get it perfect again but I was hoping to see if anyone had any experience with this issue ever in the past, and has a possible solution for us?

(Center of the photo is the stain after hard scrubbing, right side hasn’t been cleaned for reference)

Acetone is just a solvent that evaporates within minutes. The residue on the concrete is most likely whatever the acetone disolved off the surface of the steel.

I'd guess it's a combination of oils and iron oxide. The oils are protecting the iron so that's why the vinegar didn't work.

I'd start with purple degreaser, the one with sodium hydroxide. Let it soak for a few minutes and rinse away.

If there is anything left I'd use oxyclean next.

After the oxyclean then oxalic acid.

Using them in this order is important.

Also, don't sweat it, it's just concrete, it's going to be fine, there is so much more important things happening right now and we only have one life to live and the clock is ticking, and in 2 billion years when the sun goes supernova all record of this will be erased
