Labor only price to form and pour concrete stairs

Post Body

I do mainly foundations. The GC who gives me 75% of my work lost his flatwork guy and told me I had to do all his flatwork (basement slabs, garages stairs and sidewalks etc. he gives me a ton of work so I couldn't say no even tho I don't really have time for all this small flatwork. He pays for concrete on every job, I just bill him for labor and if I had to purchase any materials I can add that in. What would you charge a GC to form and pour smallish sets of stairs? I feel like I'm losing money whenever we do stairs. I like to give this guy a good price, but stairs take a lot of time to form and finish. I helped my guy form 2 sets of stairs this morning at 7am, concrete at 8. He finished up at 2pm.

You are thinking about this all wrong.

It doesn't matter a hill of beans what anyone else thinks this should cost.

You need to sit down and think through how much money you need to make each and every month in order to pay ALL your bills, pay your guys, pay yourself, and still have a bit extra profit at the end so you can slowly get ahead.

Then divide that number by 20.

For me it's $1200. I need to bring in $1200 every single weekday. It doesn't matter how basic the job is.

It makes estimating jobs so much easier. I calculate materials. I figure how many days it will take plus one or two for bullshit. Boom, that's my price.

I promise once you start thinking this way it will change everything. It will give you the confidence to just be straight up with people about pricing. Just tell your clients your day rate. For some of my best clients, once they heard that, they'll just book me for a day or two for all sorts of bullshit. They'll even call me up to supervise and assist other contractors they have at their house because they trust me and because I have predictable pricing.
