Footer for BBQ Island

I want to build a cmu bbq island in my backyard in Massachusetts. I’d ideally veneer it with a stone of some kind.
I know I will need a concrete pad for the block wall to sit on, but do I need a footer that sits below the frost line? Or would a 6” pad be sufficient (provided it’s compacted well/etc)?
Edit - this is not a DIY on the concrete pad, just want to know what I’m talking about when hiring a pro so I can get an accurate price and not waste their time
