Thinking of picking up one of these and renting it on the side. Any opinions out there?
I feel like 80lb is the standard weight for one guy to carry around a construction site. We do a lot of porcelain paver roof decks and the pavers are wrapped in boxes of two that weigh 80lbs. We do a few roof decks on the top of Brooklyn brownstones every year where we have to carry them up 5 flights. We could break them down and carry one 40lb paver at a time, but that's twice as many trips so pretty much everyone carries the full box.
After hauling 80lb boxes up five flights I can throw an 80lb bag of concrete around no problem.
When I was younger and dumber I was showing off on a jobsite by hauling an 80lb bag on each shoulder. It was a crowded site and I had to get around some shit, I took a big step and felt a sharp pain in my groin... Tried to ignore it, but if felt weird and uncomfortable... Later that night in the shower I looked down and saw a big lump where my intestine had popped through in my thigh crease... Uggh, I was so embarrassed and didn't say anything about it and just poked it back in whenever it popped through. Eventually I tore it worse and it was always out so I just took the hit and went in for surgery... Had to take it easy for 2 months while it healed. Surgery went perfect and I've been good for 3 years now.
Note: Don't carry two 80lb bags of concrete, it's not worth it.
Yeah, for sure! And PSA for anyone reading this who has an untreated hernia, you really need to go in for the mesh surgery... It's never going to get better and the tear will only get bigger as time goes on. You can be back on your feet in a few weeks doing light duty work for the next few months and you're good as new with no more aching groin bubble...
I've never used the mudmixer but I can imagine it works much better than a drum mixer.
Full disclosure, I hate drum mixers. Haha. Mixed a pallet with one once and it's a pain to get the concrete out and into the form.
The way I do it now is with a dual paddle mixer and a big 15gal poly tub from tractor supply. A 5 gal bucket works too but they break and it's kinda small.
I've probably mixed 1200 bags this way in NYC backyards. Bought a second backup mixer, both still work, but the second mixer spins opposite direction and churns and pulls itself into the concrete mix better.
Have used it for pouring after we've had to add floor boxes to existing concrete floors , it works pretty good for that

A pallet is usually 42x 80lb bags. The best prices I've found are at Lowes. It seems like most pro building suppliers don't move enough volume to have it at a good price.
