Texas frontier as an inspiration for "Beyond The Black River"?

Post Body

So I've been reading "Empire of the Summer Moon" by S. C. Gwynne, and the descriptions of Commanche raids in mid to late 1800's Texas in that book reminded me a lot of the descriptions of the raids by the Picts in "Beyond The Black River" by Robert E. Howard. Has anyone else noticed This? Do you think Howard would have heard first-hand stories of Commanches in early 20th century Texas?
