I climbed up a big mountain trying to get to the middle of the map to build a i base but the laser wall or whatever stopped me, and there anywhere that isn’t a desert? Can I access the right side of the map?

The map is huge there is Desert, jungle, Savannah, grasslands, snow, volcano. You can build whatever you want but you have to deal with temperature of the region and if you don't have the higher tier building stuff unlocked it's a pain in the ass.
