Can't toggle wifi on or off?

So I have an older Dell laptop. It's running windows 8. Last week I had accidentally turned on airplane mode and since then, I turned airplane mode off. However, I can't toggle wifi on or off. There used to be a little slide bar to turn it on/off. I've tried restarting it, updating it, restoring it back to before it happened. Nothing seems to work. When I manually enter my wifi info in the control panel (setting up a wireless connection manually) it says there was an existing connection named (x) but it won't let me connect to it.

How on earth do I fix this!?
