Breaking the cycle - how does SR/Placement even work?

First, I'm a very casual redditor, i mostly lurk and nearly never post. I'm also new to this subreddit. I looked over the rules, and I apologize profusely if I did break any. Please forgive any formatting/editing/spelling transgressions I may make.

How on earth? I can't get out of bronze on my main account. I created a new account to test a theory. My main account tank/dps/support are 1600/980/1100.

I made a new account/bought Overwatch again and got to 25 so I can do comp. Just did my DPS and Support placement matches, and got 2074/2399. Haven't done tank yet.

What am I doing wrong on my main account? Why can't I get out of the low level hell of bronze? Any tips? I'm desperate to improve my main account, it has all my nice skins.
