The 'how to protect RGIII thread'
Post Body

Open thread to discuss how to minimize the risks to our franchise's future.

I'm no expert, but here are my thoughts:

-The whole 'skins need to be more conservative with him' meme is mostly BS, for the following reasons:

-Most of his bad hits, including this one, have not been on run plays, but on scrambles.
-Those scrambles are pretty crucial to us -- sure, he needs to be safe, but being able to convert a 1st down or pick up some yards rather than taking a sack is pretty crucial. It's been critical to maintaining a lot of drives. Just throwing it away in such situations isn't an option every time or even most of the time.

Which leads me to this: It's all about strengthening our O-Line more. If RGIII is getting rushed like he was in the second half, the guy is going to get hurt, whether it's a concussion in the pocket (yeah, I know the previous concussion was while scrambling as well) or a sprained knee on a scramble.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that scrambling like he did was the absolutely correct decision in the circumstances, and shows the kind of drive that's one us games (including this one). We were what, second and long, and he looks ready to get sacked again by a ferocious pass rush. We needed to pick up some yards (or at least no lose any) to have a good chance of converting the first down on the next play. So he ran for it, and doing so might have won us the game. The way to prevent crap like this is to continue strengthening the rest of the team so that we're not depending entirely on RGIII doing risky running like this to pull us through.
